Aperture

Aperture Foundation - a premier not-for-profit arts foundation dedicated to the advancement of fine photography-was founded in 1952 by six profoundly gifted individuals possessed of lofty ideals and high ambition: photographers Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Morgan, and Minor White; historian Beaumont Newhall; and writer/curator Nancy Newhall. With scant resources, these prescient artists created a new periodical, Aperture Magazine, to serve the medium, and photography users and fine art lovers worldwide.

In March 2005, Aperture moved into its new headquarters in Chelsea's art district, at 547 West 27th Street, 4th floor, New York, N.Y. 10001. The new space incorporates a 3,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art gallery. The gallery is open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m. The general phone number is (212) 505-5555.

The Aperture Foundation publishes a periodical, Aperture Magazine, a free Internet newsletter, photography books, and sells limited edition photographs-abstract, contemporary, documentary, landscape, nudes, masters of photography, portraits and still life.

O'Keeffe Museum
Santa Fe, NM

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, opened to the public in July 1997, eleven years after the death of the artist from whom it takes its name. One of the most important artists of the 20th century, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) was devoted to creating imagery that expressed what she called "the wideness and wonder of the world as I live in it." She was a leading member of one of the avant-garde art movements that blossomed in New York in the 1910s and 1920s. O'Keeffe's images-often instantly recognizable as hers-include large-scale flowers, New York cityscapes, animal bones, and the high deserts and dramatic cliffs of her beloved New Mexico.

The Museum's collection of over 139 O'Keeffe paintings, drawings, and sculpture, including promised gifts and extended loans, is the largest in the world. Throughout the year, visitors can see a changing selection of at least 50 of these works. In addition, the Museum presents special exhibitions that are either devoted entirely to O'Keeffe's work or that combine examples of her art with works by her American modernist contemporaries.
